Live from Washington :

To be president they have to be more than 35 years old and born in US. Candidates have to live 14 years or more in US.
In US , they are two main political campaign : Democratic and Republican.
For their political campaign , candidates give interviews on Tv or radio. They do speeches .
Every elections take place in November but the winner only becomes The Official President on January.
The President is in charge of the Army , Air Force and Marine . He works to help countries get along and he signs laws.
On the 2008 elections most of Americans have elected Barack Obama ( 4 November ).
He and his family lived in the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue .

The next one elections take place on November 2012.

Shrove Tuesday

The other name of this holiday is Pancake Day, because everyone eat pancakes. It is celebrated in Ireland, United Kingdom, Canada and many others. The name of this holiday in France is Mardi Gras .
  
History :
The origin of eating pancakes arose from Christians who observe Lent .The favourite toppings are: lemon juice, chocolate spread ice cream, especially stramberry jam. Today, everyone celebrates Pancake Day regardless of religion. On Pancake day, they do pancakes races, cook fighting and many other things. The famous pancakes race takes place at Olney (next to London). It is forbiden to men, woman competitors have to be local housewives.

South Africa


South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere.

The capital of South Africa is Pretoria. The country is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.

There are several famous cities and places:
  • Robben Island

  • Cape Town

  • Soweto

  • Johannesburg (its nickname is the City of Gold)

  • Pretoria

  • Kruger National Park


South Africa's most famous animals are: the Red-Billed Oxpecker, the rhinoceros, the ostrich, the impala, the giraffe, the African rock python, the chimpanzee, the lion, the zebra, the elephant.


The languages spoken in South Africa are :

  • SiSwati

  • Tshivenda

  • Xitsonga

  • Afrikaans

The colours of the flag are blue, yellow, black, green, red and white.

Hogmanay








Hogmanay is on the 31th December , it's celebrated on the Eve of the 1st January .
It's celebrated in Scotland, in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
During Hogmanay we sing « Auld lang syne ».
Hogmanay is celebrated during 2 days.
The activity planned for the 1st day in Edinburgh is the Torchlight Procession and on the 2nd day they do « Loony dook » and « New year sprint final ».
The 2 traditions for Hogmanay are « cleaning the house »and « first footing »
